Tips for Small business owners to Survive Peak Trading Season without Burning Out

  • December 9, 2022

Peak trading season is a challenging time for most businesses. It’s when demand is at its peak and the need to keep up with orders becomes overwhelming. Working long hours, meeting tight deadlines, and juggling multiple tasks can take a toll on your mental health.

The level of stress is heightened because there are usually a multitude of tasks that need to be completed simultaneously within this limited period of time. However, with the right preparation and planning, businesses have the opportunity to thrive instead of wither from these demands and pressures. So how do you avoid burning out during peak trading season?

The peak trading season presents us with some challenges but it also gives us an opportunity to grow and become stronger than before. Let’s take a look at eight strategies that you can use in order to not only survive your peak trading season as an entrepreneur, but conquer it!

You might be concerned about meeting demands while staying sane and keeping your personal life in balance. If these concerns sound familiar, rest assured that you’re not alone!

When you’re a small business owner, especially one who works behind the scenes, there’s often a trade-off between revenue and sanity.

Identify what’s most important to you

The first step to surviving your peak trading season is identifying what’s most important to you. What do you value most in life? What’s your core purpose and your long-term vision for your business? Once you have a clear vision of what you want from your business, you’ll have a better sense of what you need to do and prioritize every day to get there. This will help you stay focused and not get distracted by the short-term stresses that come up during peak trading season.

This is the most important step in surviving your peak trading season. Focus on your health, relationships and mental well-being by bringing in support where you need it, saying no to things that don’t help you towards your goals and reaching out for help when you need it. Being present is the best way to show up for your customers and create quality work.

Set some boundaries, goals and priorities

As a small business owner, you have to wear many different hats. You’re likely handling the majority of production and customer service, as well as managing your finances, marketing and even hiring new staff. This is a lot of responsibility, and it’s easy to cross the line and neglect your health and wellbeing in the process. Make sure you set up some physical boundaries at home and at work to protect your time and energy.

If you work from home, make sure you set aside specific times to work. Otherwise, you’re likely to get distracted by the many other tasks that require your attention. If you have co-workers or staff who report to you, make sure you set up boundaries with them, too. Make sure everyone understands their role and what you expect of them so there’s no miscommunication.

Make a list of all the things that are pulling at your attention and then prioritize what you absolutely must do, what you should do and then everything else. This will help you get back on track and stop you from feeling overwhelmed. It’s a myth that entrepreneurs must be superman or superwoman. You don’t have to do everything and you shouldn’t do everything. Be clear on the things that are your goals and the things that must get done. If something doesn’t help you get closer to your goals, it’s not a priority.

Plan your work and work your plan

Depending on your industry and clientele, you may have a rush of orders during the holiday season and even into early autumn. It’s important to plan your work to ensure that you hit your deadlines and meet your customers’ expectations. It’s also important to plan your work physically, too. If you work from home, make sure your work space is set up in a way that supports your productivity. If you have kids or pets, try to separate your work space so you can be as focused as possible. If you work in a shared space, make sure you’re not distracting your colleagues with noise or keeping them up late.

If you’re feeling overwhelmed from the amount of orders you have to produce, create a plan to tackle it. Create a schedule with tasks that need to happen in each phase of production, such as research, product/ service development, marketing, logistics and more. Keep track of your schedule in a place you can refer to quickly. A planner, calendar, or task management app can help you stay on track with your schedule.

Create a physical workspace that works for you

When you’re feeling stressed, it’s easy to get overwhelmed and start to feel like you’re drowning. This often leads to poor decision-making and unproductive habits. To avoid getting overwhelmed, it’s important to create a physical workspace that helps you feel calm and focused. A calm, pleasant work environment can help you avoid getting overwhelmed. Having a workspace that is comfortable and inspires creativity can help you stay productive.

Keep the following in mind when choosing a workspace: – Is the space quiet enough to work? – Is there enough room to work without things on your desk getting in the way? – Are there enough shelves, drawers and/or storage for all your work materials? – Is the desk or table big enough for all of your work? – Is the lighting good enough for all of your work? – Are there enough outlets for all of your work equipment? – Is the seating comfortable enough for long hours of work? – Do you have enough room to stand in your workspace?

Hire more helpers and learn to delegate

When you’re a small business owner, you have to wear many hats. You probably have a lot of things you’re responsible for and not enough time to do everything. This is why delegation and outsourcing are two of the most powerful tools in any leader’s toolbox.

If you can afford it, hire someone to help you with production. You can hire freelance designers, assistants, or marketing specialists to help you with certain tasks that are not part of your core competency. If you can’t afford to hire an assistant, learn to delegate. This means that rather than attempting to do everything yourself, you assign tasks to yourself. You can use spreadsheets and to-do lists to stay on top of your delegated tasks and make sure you don’t fall behind.

Use tech to increase productivity

There are many productivity and time-saving tools available. Take advantage of these tools to save time and stay on top of your orders and tasks.

1. Use email automation to give yourself reminders about important things. This can help you remember to reach out to customers, create proposals, send invoices, etc.

2. Use productivity apps to stay on track with your goals and tasks. This can help you focus on what’s most important and help you stay accountable.

3. Automate your social media posting so that you can stay focused on your work while still being present online. This can help you build your brand while increasing your reach.

4. Use technology to design and edit your work. This can help you meet deadlines and stay on top of your orders.

5. Use tech to manage your finances. This can help you save time by avoiding mistakes and taking less time to record your financial activities.

Take notes so you can improve and forecast how to manage next peak season

You can use a journal to record things that you want to improve and keep track of during peak trading season. This can help you analyse what you can do better during next year’s peak trading season. You can also use a journal to brainstorm ideas for next year’s marketing strategy and the products you plan on creating.

Take care of yourself and take a breather to get new perspective

Investing in yourself and your health is the best investment you can make. Take the time to do wellness activities that you enjoy, such as yoga, painting, journaling, walking in nature, reading, going out with friends, etc. Take breaks throughout your day to give yourself a break from the busyness of your day-to-day life. You can take a quick walk, meditate, or just sit quietly. This can help you recharge and gain a new perspective on your life. It can help you find new ideas and solutions to challenges you’re facing in your business.
